Customer Rating: Summary: Excellent Comment: Sufjan is incredible and this is a pleasing addition to my ever growing collection of music.
Customer Rating: Summary: Thank you Sufjan Comment: There's really probably not much else I can say that hasn't been said here, but this music is just pure, honest, uplifting, sweet, charming, soft, loud, energetic, calm and soothing all in one big ball of wonderfulness.
Sufjan has a voice that could lull a child to sleep or bring a tear to the coldest, heartless eye. His lyrics are intelligent and very introspective. The music itself is a great folk/rock/pop combination of over 20 instruments (guitar, piano, flutes, keys, strings, xylophone, etc) and Sufjan plays a lot of them himself, adding to the acheivement of this release (and all his others- GREAT as well).
The concept for the album is one of a supposed 50 albums, 1 for each state, this one for his hometown of Michigan. To date, this and Illinios (also amazing) are the only 2 recorded for the concept. I can only hope more are coming.
Thanks Sufjan for the "if ever stuck on an island" music.
Customer Rating: Summary: Doesn't make me want to visit Michigan. Comment: I kept waiting for this CD to pick up a little steam. There isn't necessarily anything bad about it. It is pleasant and artful. It just seems to drag on at a slow and redundant pace. "Sleeping Bear, Sault Saint Marie" and "For the Widows in Paradise, For the Fatherless in Ypsilanti" are highlights. I just wish the rest of the CD had some meat on its bones.
Customer Rating: Summary: mellow and rich Comment: Sufjan has a mellow quality and a talent for original melody, much
in the mood of namesake CAT Stevens. I love the disc, but for God's sake,
GET A DRUMMER!
Customer Rating: Summary: The wind chimes Comment: or whatever they are get tedious on this album, which is littered with sonic experiments that lull you to sleep and pretentious song titles like "Oh God, Where Are You Now? (In Pickeral Lake? Pigeon? Marquette?)" I'd like to see Justin Timberlake cover that one.
If you're into writing poetry or watching the rain or stroking your girlfriend's hair for an hour straight, you might like it. If you're like me, you want music that keeps you awake, not funeral dirges. Still curious? Download The Upper Peninsula. If you like that and you have a college degree, I will tell your mother to kick you out of the house.
